Hi Annette,
I just wanted to pop in to say hi and to tell you I met a man this past weekend from Letcher County, Ky. We were camping with friends on Barren River Lake in Allen County. His name was Doug Anderson, he told me he was from Neon Ky in Letcher County, he knows the area well and from what I gathered from him was he lived up around Hemphill, He knew several Holbrook, Potter, and Flemming families, He told me where Potter Town was and he was also fimilar with the Bottom Fork area, I didn’t get to talk to him as long as I wanted to but he told me he goes back each year to his class reunion, I was wondering if you knew of any families with the last name of Anderson from that area. My husband teases me all the time because it seems everywhere we go I am always running into someone from home, Allen tells me I am like a radar devise, that I can always find someone from Letcher no matter where I am at and he has never seen anything like it.. I was at Wesley’s last reenactment and met a man from Letcher and of course when I meet someone everything else is put on hold and I talk to them forever about home or at least that’s what my families tells me I do, haha. but I sure can ramble on at times as you know, especially when I find someone from the mountains. But if know of any information on the Anderson family from that area please let me know. When I meet someone like this it always gets my curiosity going, Thanks again for finding the oburiary of John Craft, I had to cry when I read it and I could just feel the Love that Aunt Cassie had for Uncle John and the last time she could convey that love to him in her writings. I can’t thank you enough for all pleasure you have given to me in finding all the information you have on my family.
Love Ya
Anne

Hi Anne,

It’s always so good to hear from you. I hope we can connect the Andersons you write about. We have a lot of Andersons on the site, but the one I think you may be most interested in is the one that is connected to the Holbrook family. Ransom H Holbook m. Nancy Jane Anderson d/o James Anderson and Jane Perlina Potter (Jane Perlina Potter is my Great Grandpa, Abraham Potter’s sister). I wonder if this is the line he was talking to you about? Let me know if you can find a connection.

Your Aunt Cassie did write such a wonderful tender piece about her husband, didn’t she? It is so sweet and warms the heart to read it and at the same time brings tears to your eyes. I just love it, too. I’m so glad I found it and even more glad that you appreciate it so much.

Love ya,
Annette

Hi Everyone,

I just got the following email from Sue Kovack, but I’m afraid I don’t know which weekend she is writing about. I will go ahead and post this and then get back with a date on it. I hope it isn’t the 2 and 3 August, 2008 weekend, because if it is, I’m afraid it is too late to post, but I’ll post it anyhow. I believe this was an email forwarded to me by Sue Kovack who got the email from someone else.

***Beginning of Email***

I hope you will include this on your news to let the descendants of Joel Martin Wright and his wife Susan are having a reunion this week-end near Shea’s Cementery, McRoberts, KY. Their graves were recently found and a marker has been placed by the McRoberts Historical Society. The reunion will be held at the Fish Pond Lake (name may be incorrect) near McRoberts. I’ll bet you that everyone of their descendants will want to be there this Saturday. Joel and Susan Wright were the first Wrights to come into KY from Virginia, when my great grandfather Samuel, was a small child. He was the last of their children to be born in Virginia. All the others were born at McRoberts.

Orville and I spent many years trying to find their graves and could find all their childrens graves but not Joel and Susan. I am sure when we were looking that it had grown up so badly that it was impossible to see. Their original stones with names and dates are also there. Can you tell how excited that I am!

****End of Email***

I sent an email off to Sue Kovack for more information regarding the Reunion,
Annette

Hi Annette,
I was going to scan this flyer on the 28th Holbrook Family Reunion to you but I am having some problems out of my scanner, this reunion will be held August 31, 2008 at Natural Bridge State Park, Slade Kentucky, shelter # 2 ( at the sky lift ) there will be signs posting the way. It will be a pot luck affair with everyone bringing their own drinks, Activities will include Raffles, Horseshoes, Corn-Hole and Bingo. A prize will be given to the oldest and youngest person.
I think I got everything covered but I will also be taking the information I have gathered on my Holbrook family with pictures that I have.
If you could post this on your reunion page I would be most grateful. Thanks again for all your help.
Love Ya

Good morning Ms. Annette,
I want to thank you for adding the pictures to my album that I sent you for Anna Lee.. We will put names on them later.. I looked for you all day yesterday but didn’t see you anywhere.. I was on and off all day and in between I canned 7 pints of tomatoes.. and Saturday I cooked 4 dozen ears of corn and cut it off the cob and put it in the freezer for the winter months.. I hope to go tomorrow ( Tuesday ) to buy some white half runners ( green beans ) to cold pack and put in the freezer also..I will be going to get more corn and cabbage also.. the corn to make pickle corn, and cabbage to make sour kraut and if we get the green beans I will make or I should say attempt to make some mix pickles … We love all that stuff…
Well Bert has got the air conditioner man coming to check ours out this morning so I better get in the shower and get dressed..
Again thanks for all that you do for me and my family.. we appreciate it so much.. No one really know the hours you spend on your web site so others may enjoy it.. You have a great web site and it just keeps getting better with all the hard work you continue to do.. Thank You..
We love you..

Hidy Hazel,

You’re mighty welcome..Thank you for sending the pictures; they’re just wonderful. You know how we all love the photos. I was looking for you yesterday, too, but I never did catch up to you.

All that talk about cooking and canning, and freezing veggies is making me hungry. I love fresh vegetables…especially those that are grown in good dirt like you have there and like they have in Kentucky. Here in Southern Texas, we have to buy good top soil.

The closest I ever get to good home grown stuff here in Texas is from the farmer’s market we had in Pasadena, but it’s no longer there. There is still a farmer’s market here in Houston area, but I haven’t been to it, yet.

Hope you got your a/c fixed,
Luv ya,
Annette

Hi Hazel,

Got your message and don’t know about any bad weather. As far as I know, we haven’t had any bad weather at all, so I am fine. I don’t think we’ve even had any rain.

Talk to you later,

Good Morning, Annette,
I seen the post in the guestbook that Maryanne Holbrook had entered, John Holbrook her grandfather and William my grandfather were brothers, so this would make us 2nd cousins right.
I just wanted to pop in to say again Thank You for all you do for others, without you I would have never have known about this lady or never would have heard of her, it is always exciting to find family members, so thanks again for all the hard work you do, because without a doubt the great job you do is no easy task.
God Bless
Luv You
Anne

Hi Anne,

It’s always great to connect to cousins. I just love it. I always have to go look at the Relationship Chart to be sure about kinship because sometimes I think I have it and when I double check, I don’t. That Relationship Chart is pretty helpful. It helps me to figure out complicated kinship. I don’t think yours with her is complicated, though. Nonetheless, I’m still going to go look before I put my opinion in here. … I’m back and I looked at the Relationship chart and from what I figured on it; I agree with you that you and Maryanne are 2nd cousins. That is very nice, isn’t it?

Luv ya,
Annette

Good morning Hazel and All,

It’s so sad to say that the Mountain Clans mailing list is now a closed list and last evening, the owners and moderators began banning, enforcing and scolding the list members. I have 100′s of emails (they’ve slowed down this morning to just a couple of emails) in my email program. Personally, I was stunned and dismayed at the treatment of their now ex – members. I didn’t enjoy seeing the nice folks on their list get scolded and banned for life for “no email” settings and for not posting, etc. They called their members who “just read” their emails “Lurkers”. I thought that’s what we were supposed to read our emails. I would consider it an honor and a privilege to have so many “Lurkers” in our Potter List. Perhaps I will start building up our list with all of our submitters’ great stuff; it might be fun if our list becomes more active. At present, we have an inactive list which rarely posts any email to those of us who are members. When I get going on the list, I will be sure to update everyone on the progress.

They have nice folks on the Mountain Clans list and I have always enjoyed their emails, but getting an email from 300 + people each and every month (besides the email from the daily submitters) may be too much for my own preferences. Besides the people they booted off for having their settings on “no email”, they have had several people unsubscribe from their list. Besides the banning and booting (with no option of returning to the list) for the “no email” settings and the error of being a “Lurker”, they also require written permission from the owners, moderators, and posters to use anything posted to the list. I would like to understand how we get “written” permission from the required 4 people to use their data. Do we wait for signed letters from the required 4 folks before we can use their post? I may (reluctantly) post that question to the list owners with the hopes that I don’t get booted out for being a problem. I’ve been a member of the list since 2004 and I would like to stay a member (?), but if all the fun and enjoyment are taken out of it by strict, demanding rules, I’m not sure if it is what I want to be doing. I have to give it all much thought and consideration.

Anyhow, Hazel, I enjoyed our phone calls yesterday and always look forward to hearing from you in any shape, form or fashion. Just thought I would catch all up on what’s been going on with us and post what’s new in the lists.

It has always been my wish and aspiration to keep genealogy free and to get as much information out to those researchers like myself who are seeking out the history of their families and tracing their ancestry to leave behind for future generations. If any of you “lurkers” and “users” would like to come join our PotterList, you are very welcome to do so and you may “lurk” as much as you like in ours. We do not force our members to post and if the list sits quietly for a time, that is fine by us. In our list, you are welcome to set your email receipt settings to whatever your heart desires; including “no email” if you wish. I want a list where everyone is perfectly comfortable at whatever level they wish to be. You can join our list by submitting an email to potterlist-subscribe@yahoo.com I’m not positive, but you may need a Yahoo email address to join a Yahoo group. If you need help, let me know and I’ll be glad to help all I can.

Luv to all,
Annette Potter

Hazel,
Sorry about sending you back to annette. I have had 3 funerals in 2 weeks and I am sort of out of everything. I remember thinking that the line you were looking for sounded so familiar to me. I tried to get the old brain to working on where I had seen that name. Now, I know. I saw your request for it on this web site. i do keep names in my head and when i come across some of them i remember who was looking for them. have you tried the LDS site? they have a new family history site and everyone is bragging on how lucky they are on finding some of their people. i have not tried and i am LDS. who knows, maybe it will help you or maybe not.
love ya, kaie
