Hugh Boggs, son or John and Nancy Boggs, was considered a prosperous man. He was a farmer and a tinker man. A page is devoted to him in William Ely's History of the Big Sandy Valley. Mr Ely implies that Hugh was imposed on by his less industrious sons.
There is a story that Hugh's son, Henderson, bought all the land on the right fork of Caines Creek for a "ham of meat and a rifle gun".
Henderson's home, still standing and occupied at this time [1965] by his descendant, Mrs. Opal Boggs Liming, is one of the better homes in that section. It is said that Hugh's mother-in-law, Hannah Lyons Blevins, also lived with Henderson after she became a widow. She was over a hundred years old when she died and was one of the last widows of the American Revolution carried on the pension roll for Lawerence Co. She was blind in her old age. There is an instance of a "judgement sent on" one of the old lady's descendants for laughing at her great-granmother's infirmities: Phoebe Jane, daughter of Jim Goins and Matilda Lyons Boggs laughed at her great-granny and "mocked" [initated] her pigeon toed walk. Phoebe Jane [always called Pet] who married Henry Hicks, became pigeon-toed and later, blind, like "Granny Hanner".

From the writings of Cratis Williams, Dean Application State Univ. and dated 1970, Boggs reunion on Cains Creek.
Elijah Boggs married Katie Gambill and lived at the Cliffs of the Little Sandy River in Elliott Co., where he is buried. One of his sons, Jarret Boggs married Margaret Williams and lived on Caines Creek. Please note that Mr. Williams spells it Gambill and the census taker spelled the name Gamble. It is spelled both ways on headstones in cemeteries in that area. Also note the Garred is spelled Jarret by Mr. Williams. (who knows)I, Roxan, question the Marriage date of Elijah and "Katie" Gambill/Gamble, Paul, you have it as Feb. 22, 1844, and yet you have his death as 1841. All of the children born with dates are born after his death.
