HISTORY ON MARTIN FUGATE & FAMILY -
The "Fugate Family of Russell County, Virginia A Genealogy of the Descendants of Francis, Benjamin, Colbert, Zachariah, Henley & William Fugate, Settlers of Moccasin Valey from 1772. By Dr. David Faris, Gateway Press, Inc., Baltimore, Maryland 1986

Reference - Page 1 in book (Historical Background) - The Fugate brothers of Moccasin Valley appear to be the grandsons of Josias Fugate of King George County, Virginia and great-grandsons of the IMMIGRANT ANCESTOR, and their descendants represent only a small portion of the Fugate descendants in this country.

Martin Fugate of Russell County
No record has been found for Martin Fugate since the dismissal of the suit in Frederick County in 1755 until the tax lists of Russell County in 1789. The last record of Martin Fugate is the report of the administration of his Estate in Russell County by Zachariah Fugate on 29 June 1803. The inventory of the Estate, made on 16 July 1803, included one each razor, waist coat, close bodied coat, pair stockings, cap, hat, long hoe and two shirts, appraised at one pound eleven shillings and three pence (Russell County Will Book 2:32). Map shows Russell County, Virginia to be in the middle on one side is the Moccasin Creek, and on the other side is the border of Washington County considered to be Moccasin Valley.

HISTORY ON MARTIN FUGATE - Martin had at least 4 sons, Francis, Henley, Zachariah, and Colbert, which were all mentioned in court records. In addition, Benjamin and William Fugate, all residing in Moccasin Creek are probably his sons. He may also have had a daughter, Ann, married to Samuel Haddix of Moccasin Creek. INDIANS KILLED a possible SECOND DAUGHTER (SARAG), married to JAMES McCARTY, in 1788. Martin's son Colbert, as well as Colbert's son, Isaac Beverly Fugate, who was born May 4, 1804, lived their entire lives in Moccasin Valley, Russell County, VA. Moccasin Valley, where most of the Fugates and Tates settled, is a fertile but rocky farming area located in Southwestern part of Russell County, VA. It extends from Hansonville to near Big Moccasin Gap in Scott County, with Clinch Mountain on the South and Moccasin Ridge on the North. The name of Big Moccasin Creek, attributed to Daniel Boone about 1769, after the first settlers found Indian moccasin footprints in the soft mud of the creek banks. Martin Fugate was recorded in Frederick Co in 1755 (History of Frederick Co). The area he was located was possibly known as Dunmore Co. from 1772 to 1777, renamed Shenandoah Co in 1777, and later divided into Page and Warren Counties. He was also recorded in Culpepper Co VA, in 1761, 1763 and 1775. It is probable that all of his children were born in this area. His brother John Fugate Jr. was recorded as selling his land in the same area on October 9, 1771 then purchasing land in 1772 in the Moccasin Valley in what were then Botetourt Co and later Fincastle, Washington and finally Russell Co. Martin was first noted in Russell Co as exempt from taxation. It was in Russell Co. that Martin’s final belongings were recorded and settled on June 29, 1803.

I am a descendant of Sarah Fugate sp. of James McCarty and was killed by Indians in Feb 1788 Grainger, Tennessee. Her exact (Parents) is not known though has often been speculated to be Martin Fugate & his sp. Sarah Clark. I find this problematic but not entirely improbable. As Martin was born in 1725 and Sarah Fugate's sp. James McCarty was born in 1736 that would be only a ten year difference. From what little I know of Martin's estate proven in 1803, long after Sarah Fugate-McCarty's death, the details in the settling of his estate neither include Sarah nor preclude her from being identified as a daughter.

Do you have more information on Sarah Fugate-McCarty who was killed in 1788 & the Fugates who migrated through Grainger County, Tennessee.

Sincerely,
Cousin Tammy & Dan Setterquist
