Ison Family Descendants

Notes

2. Gideon Ison IV

Gideon IV established a home at the mouth of Defeated Creek, on Linefork Creek, Letcher County, Kentucky. There he had quite an empire according to his value listed in the census of 1850. He made his living from farming. According to the census, Gideon had one slave in 1840. In1850, he is listed as having 2800 acres of land. He was literate and, apparently, he was a shrewd business man for he managed to help all of his children obtain large tracts of land. He divided the home farm between sons Gideon V and N. Bonapart.

He was approximately 21 years old when he married Rebecca Stamper from Rock House Creek near present day Isom, Kentucky. His wife, Rebecca, was the source of retinitis pigmentosa in the Ison generation and she was blind for some 20 years prior to her death. Until the 1980's, the homeplace was still standing....a two story log home which, in its day, would have been quite a home for the area. The slave quarters were said to have been up the hollow behind the big house. The slave cemetery was located on the point on the right side of Defeated creek, looking up Defeated, across the creek from the home place and was supposed to have had quite a few graves in it. The family cemetery was located at the rear of the house on the base of the hill. He and Rachel are buried on the hill back of the home place about 150 feet from where the house stood. A note in Eli Hall's diary indicates that his last days were filled with great suffering from a long illness.

Rachel Stamper

1 _MDCL Retinitis pigmentosis

Rachel lived with her daughter in law, Lethiann, when the 1880 census was taken and was listed as 77 years old, being born in Virginia.

Rachel was afflicted with the hereditary eye disease retinitis pigmentosa which caused her to become blind approximately 20 years prior to her death at a ripe age of 90 years.

Rachel was 22 years old when she had Ursula, her first child. She was illiterate.

3. George Ison , Jr.

This George Ison was known as "Fighting" George because he was a boxer and whipped everyone for miles around who wanted to spar with him, bare knuckles of course. There is a tale that a fellow heard of George's talented fists in Virginia and had to try him out for himself. When he arrived George was out in only a long shirt plowing his fields. He informed George of his quest and when he climbed off his horse George whipped the stuffings out of him then took him home with him for dinner before he returned to Virginia
Raised his family on Line Fork at the mouth of Big Branch. He is listed in the 1850 census as having 3000 acres and he was living in Letcher County at the time probably on Kingdom Come Creek or Kings Creek for he was a neighbor to the Frazier families...apparently he later moved to the mouth of Big Branch when his mother died or when she became disabled.
