Andrew Jackson "Brandy Jack" (Sherd And Mary Roberts) Mullins
Fact 1. He was in prison from 1870-1875 for making counterfeit coinsnears Lickfork.
Fact 2. On May 31, 1860, Deed Book 2, page 51, he purchased 2400 hundredacres on Indian Creek From Wilson Rose.
The following is an edited and copied extraction of the original in thepossession of Jarvey Mullins of St. Paul, VA, a son of Andrew Jackson"Brandy Jack" Mullins. Mr. Mullins said this was written up by one ofhis brothers (possibly Willard).
Andrew Jackson Mullins was captured at his home at the "Got Bottom", atthe mouth of Alleys Creek on Cranesnest River--a large log home. LarkSelther and five other men arrested him one night. “Joe Sire”, asupposed vagrant from North Carolina, betrayed him. Andrew Jackson washanded his sentence at Abingdon, VA in the Federal Court, and wasconvicted for swindling the United Stated Government, and not forcounterfeiting, as the money that he made was perfect in every detail, containing the proper alloys in weight and cct. He was sentenced in 1877to the Federal Penitentiary in Albany New York, to serve a term of 11years; his actual time served was 7 years & 7 months. He was dischargedin March of 1882.
Lark Selther was killed just after Dad was sentenced. His horse, pipe, saddle and saddle bags were found in the flatwoods 4 miles southeast ofCoeburn Virginia by a Ginseng digger--Daniel Ramey found the dead Horseand tried to knock off the horse's shoes, but a voice spoke to Daniel(?), so Daniel started running toward his home in Coeburn and on hisarrival was trouble (ie terribly) excited to break the news about thedead horse and the "voice". He told them he ran all the 4 miles and theyasked him how did he get across Clinch River? He said when he got toClinch River there 'warn't no river there!'
After this news was heard, the Law knew Selther was missing, and soonafterwards found his body in a hollow chestnut log near his home. It hasbeen a mystery to this day as to who killed Lark Selther--he was known tobe a cruel creature, not only as an officer but also in other ways. I'veheard it said that during his day he would ride horse back through thecountry. In those days there were few roads and people traveled mainlyby way of winding paths that cut around the mountains. He stayed as oneman's house one time--the man kept him over night and fed his horse. So,the next morning Selther started to leave and pulled out a bright newsilver dollar and gave it to the man's little girl, and the little girland her parents were thrilled with this courtesy and thanked him sokindly for that goodly deed. Sometime soon afterwards Lark Selther cameback and spent another night with the family. The next morning, insteadof giving the Daughter another silver dollar he asked for the one he'dgiven her before back. Then he accused the girl's father of having acounterfeit dollar in his possession and he had this man prosecuted forpassing counterfeit money!
It was also said that he was also known to be cruel to his wife's family, and on his last and final raid his wife told as he was starting out thatshe wished that the buzzards would pick his eyes out before he returned.(!)
On the rock, which he struck when he fell off his horse after being shotin the head, they found a lock of his black hair and blood in the middleof the old ox road.
This rock has since been called the Selther Rock and when I was a child Icould hear the old people talk about the Selther Rock out in theflatwoods, but I never did know where it was. I always wanted to see itand know exactly where it was, as I had heard so much talk about it. Ilonged to take someone along with me that could be sure to identify itand know it for sure when they saw it.
It was known by most all of the people that the Selther rock was onJaybird Branch in the flatwoods 4 miles out of Coeburn on the way toDungannon Va. in Scott Co. Since that time a new hard top road had beenconstructed and on a more convenient grade and that had isolated the oldox road. The entire area looked a good deal different to Abraham &Lettie. The day we approached the Jay Branch was July 4, in about 1952.We asked someone at a small store if this was the branch where theSelther Rock was and they said it was. I asked him how far was it downto it, and he said it was a short distance at a little spring.
I went on down there and found the little spring but no rock. Abefollowed me and I asked him was this it and he said no. So I said I knowwhere there's another rock that someone told me was the Selther rock.(They searched and found this rock but it too was not the right one.Later on they met a man who told them of another man who know thelocation. They next dropped in to talk to this man--GM)
We visited a man by the name of Stiden (or Stidous), an old man who livedwith his daughter. He lived about 150 yards from the Selther rock. Itwas located a short distance in front of his house. He said his motherfirst showed him the spot when he was 6 years old. He was 85 years oldwhen we visited him that day. The surroundings had grown up to the pointwhere you couldn't tell there had ever been a road, altho' Mr. Stidenshowed us where it had been. The little spring had gone dry as well, which throw Ed off Abe at first. I asked him was this the spot and hesaid yes this is it. I had the greatest confidence in Abe as he had toldme if he ever saw it again he would know it. So I was glad and Isupposed thrilled more than anybody else in the party as I had for solong looked forward to finding the place. Before we left we cut the datethat Selther was killed on the rock and the month. (Aug)
Selther's daughter __ from California was in Scott Co. visiting her oldhome place where she was born. While back in this section she was ableto visit the rock with the aid of someone who knew of her father, hisdeath and the location of where he was shot. I have her name and photoand age in my scrapbook in Virginia, but just now I can't recall either.I remember she was past eighty tho'. The man, who took her according tothe Bristol Herald, told her that he saw her father killed and she seemedto be thrilled to know that the mystery was solved as to her father'sdeath. She said she never did know much about it, she being only 1year's old when she left there.
To my mind, no one will ever know who killed Lark Selther. I was toldthat to get Selther to where they wanted to murder him, the party thatplanned to kill him wrote him a letter, and signed other Marshall's nameto it. The letter said to meet him at this spot with twenty days rationsand food to provide them on their raid on a certain day at a certainhour, and they would go back up to Mullins' house and scare his wife andmake give up the money dies for further evidence (against Brandy Jack).
I have been told that they accused Harris & Gibson in Scott Co. (of beinginvolved in the murder of Selther) as well as my half brother Dave (theoldest boy in the family), and my brother-in-law William Roberson whomarried my half sister Anne. Then I've heard Rainwater Ramsey wasinvolved somehow.
However, my father Andrew Jackson Mullins was at that time in the FederalPrison in Albany New York and the warden came through and stopped andtold my father 'Say Mullins, Selther's been shot dead!' Father says wellI can clear one man, I didn't do it. The warden says, no, but yourfriends did.
I've heard my father say the raiders never found anything in the way ofevidence which could lead to prosecution, but this so called vagrant (theterm used here was "vagrant") Joe Sire Hill was sent there to learn aboutFather's business--but he never did learn anything except that Fatherdidn't sleep at the house at night. On the day of the night that theyraided Father's place, Hill pestered (in original the term was 'bothered)father for a shooting match. So, all the guns back then were muzzleloading, and after they had their shooting match the guns were empty andwere never reloaded. Later on Hill kept insisting that Father stay athome (that night) and sleep in the house. And as yet had never suspicionEd the vagrant until it was too late. After midnight someone hollered'hello' and father got up and went to the door and a man asked who livedthere, and father said Mullins. He said 'Mullins I've got a man with abroken leg out here, his horse fell down with him and broke his leg andwe want to leave him here till we can go to Clintwood and fetch a doctor.
Father said 'all right, bring him In, and when they entered the doorSelther and the five other men he'd brought with him grabbed him and thisguest of his-Hill, jumped out of the bed to help put hand cuffs on him.Father saw then how Hill had double-crossed him.
He had no chance against them-with all the guns unloaded. He had abutcher knife on what he called the fire board and he thought of theknife and tried to get to it and he drug and carried them all the wayacross the big log house, from the door to the mantle, and by the time hegot there he was exhausted. They handcuffed him and Hill went with themand caught two of his brother-in-laws that night--Andy and WilsonMullins, and Andy was killed in prison. Father said that Andy's deathhurt him worst than anything, and they wouldn't let him got to thefuneral. He said that they were so cruel to him that he was mad for fiveyears. While in prison they brought him food that had spoiled, even withmaggots in it. He would push it back and they would save it and bring itback for the next meal. He wrote Phoebe his wife that they were bringinghim food that his dog wouldn't eat. At the prison they had a rule that(the prisoners) were not to look up at the sun. A guard came up to himone day and said, 'Mullins, I'm going to have to punish you, for I caughtyou looking up'. Father said, 'I didn't look up and if you punish me forsomething I didn't do, I will be the last man that you ever punish." Hesaid he got a small thin knife that he used in his work (he was a shoemaker in prison), and he pulled a knot out of the wall and put the littleknife in the knothole--for defense if they undertook to punish Him. Hesaid under the cruel conditions he'd just as soon be dead. but theynever did come to punish him. Note: In my family there is a story ofhow Andy died. Supposedly, he was killed by the guards who werepunishing him for something he'd done or not done. They supposedly boundhim and prior to putting him in a rain barrel filled with water, theyplaced a spoon in his mouth and told him if he wished to live he'd betterbail fast. (Another thing I remember them saying was that they had towear striped prison clothes and work on the rock pile breaking uprock--GM)
A further note on Selther-as evidence against Father Selther had gone allover the country and picked up scraps of silver and had them in hissaddlebags. He presented this silver as evidence, pouring the saddlebagsout on the table in the courtroom. Father said in all my life I havenever before lay ed eyes on that stuff.
Father was discharged in March of 1882; nine moths later to a day adaughter was born named Lettie, the last child of his wife Phoebe.
(My research had identified 17 children of Brandy Jack, seven by PollyMullins: Annie, Savilla, David, Lucinda, Jane and Litha, and GeorgeWashington; six by Phoebe Vance: Darthula, Noah, Sam, Doc, William, &Lettie; four by Mellie" Andrew, Scott, Willard & Jarvey--In thefollowing continuation of the above, three more children arementioned--GM)
After Phoebe died Father married Melvie Cardelia Barns (according toJarvey Mullins she was a daughter of Gail & Jane Hall Barnes). Melviehad four sons (and one daughter stillborn). Sometime between hismarriage to Sarah Mullins and his marriage to Melvie he became the fatherof two children by a woman named Sarah Russell--a boy named Frank andRosie.
Sherd Mullins was the father of Andrew Jackson Mullins. Sherd Mullinsmarried Nancy Roberts in North Carolina, in Caney Co. on the Toe River.the family moved from there to Harlan Co. Ky. Sherd and his wife livedtheir last days in a small house their son Jack built on McFalls Fork ofBold Camp. They died and were buried on Bold Camp (at the Levi CantrellCemetery). Sherd died with cancer (on his hand). Sherd and Nancy had 6sons and 4 daughters. Andrew Jackson was the oldest and his brotherswere: Abraham, Henry, Booker, Marshall & Sherd. His sisters were Sally(called Puss--she married Booker Rife who moved to Slate Creek inBuchanan Co., Va.) & 2) Nancy, who married Harvey Robinson in Pike co. Kynear Caney Creek, & 3) __, who married Johnny Cantrell on Bold Camp, WiseCo., Va. & 4)Betts, who married Elijah Mullins (called Lige Buncombe)-hewas from W.Va. Elijah & Betts had 6 sets of twins and 22 children.
Sherd & one of his brothers came up to this country from NC in early1800's. After settling first near present Virgie Ky. where his brother(Ambrose?) was killed by Indians, Sherd moved to a place below presentday Prestonsburg. I believe they call the place Vanlear. They movednext to ___. Years later they move to Shelby Gap. All my uncles & auntsstarted (ie were born) there. One of my father's brothers settled onBeef Hide.
My Father passed away April 9, 1917. He still had a good memory andstill worked on his farm. He died from an injury when he stepped on anail. He was working on a fence. He was 104 years old, if all ourrecords are true. (Brandy Jack was actually 94 years old when hedied--GM)
Misc: Left out from the above: the father of Polly Mullins, First wifeof Andrew Jackson Mullins, was 'Spot Face Dave Mullins'; ie DavidMullins, born ca 1798 in NC, another son of Booker Mullins, born 1764-4,and therefore the brother of Andrew Jackson's father Sherd).
373. Wilson "Bacon" ("Spotted Dave" And Virginia Short) Mullins
BIOGRAPHY: Wilson, son of David and Virginia Jane Short Mullins, marriedtwice. His first wife was Rebecca Maggard, daughter of David and SusanHarrison Maggard of Letcher County, Kentucky.
Wilson's second marriage was to Rebecca Shepherd, daughter of William andServilla Amburgey Shepherd, widow of William H. Boggs, Sr. The commonlink in the Boggs-Mullins connection on Bold Camp is through RebeccaShepherd Boggs Mullins. Her children by William H. Boggs, Sr. and byWilson Mullins are, of course, half brothers and sisters.
Another Boggs-Mullins link was the marriage of Wilson's sister, RebeccaAgnes Mullins, to Silas Boggs, son of William H. and Rebecca ShepherdBoggs.Three young children of Wilson and Rebecca Maggard Mullins died withinfour days of each other during a flux epidemic in June 1857. Elizabeth, born 1847, died June 5, 1857; William, born 1850, died June 8, 1857; andJohn, born 1852, died June 7, 1857. The Riley Mullins Cemetery waslocated near Wilson's home on Mullins Fork, Bold Camp Creek. At the time,it was a community burying ground for that section of Bold Camp. Wilsonhas a grave marker along with four of his children from his marriage toRebecca Shepherd Boggs Mullins. It is reasonable to assume that RebeccaMaggard Mullins and her three young children are buried in unmarkedgraves in the Riley Mullins Cemetery along with Rebecca Shepherd Boggs,Wilson's second wife, and some of their children whose burial place isnot known.

When someone was sick orneeded food, or when there was a death in the community, and people were"sitting up with the dead", William would go to the kitchen, get a largebutcher knife then go out to the smokehouse and cut a large slab of saltcured bacon from a 'middling', and take the piece of meat to the familyin need. When the meat was sent by relative or friend, it was presentedto the person receiving it with the statement, "Bill sent you thisbacon." It wasn't long until everyone who knew him started calling him"Bacon Bill."

Dock "D.C." Mullins' wife was Cosba Jane Mullins, daughter of John W andMary E Mullins. I still haven't figured out which of several John W andMary E Mullins couples this might be...there are quite a few! There areat least 4 couples who look most promising have been Cosba's parents. All we know is that John W was born March 1838 in VA (Probably DickensonCo VA) and his wife Mary E was born November 1838 in TN.
