I was born November 22, 1863, I think I am 67 now - where brother
James
Yates now lives near Clintwood, Virginia. My parents were Jacob Yates and
Hazy (Mullins) Yates. One of my mother's brothers James Mullins married
Betsey Wright , and she was, after Jim's death, called " Widder Bets". The
old log house they lived in near the head of Brush Creek is now called
"The
Widder Betz House". It is the oldest house around Clintwood, and was
there
whenI was a child. As far as I know they never lived anywhere else. It
wasn't a new house the first time I saw it. Have heard that Uncle Jim was
the first settler there. Have heard Mother say she had a sister named
Jennie
in West Virginia, but I don't know who she married. I never saw her, nor
heard of any of herfamily coming back here. Have heard Mother say Uncle
Jim
was 53 years old at his death. Widow Betz was 50 years old then. I never
heard mother say when she was born. She was the youngest child in the
family. Mother told me about Aunt Mary Fleming living three weeks alone
in a
little house in the meadow where Clintwood now is when they first come to
this section. The bears and wolvesbothered her a lot while she was there.
Three of my parents' oldest childrenwere born at Jim's on the hill. The
family had gone down to see Grandma Mullins one Sunday and after staying
two
or three hours, they returned home and found the house burnt. They then
built a house and lived after that where Bishopnow lives.
I recollect my grandmother Mullins. She stayed with father untilher
death.
On the day of her death, she sat down at the table to eat breakfast.
Suddeny, she called out, "Oh, I've got a pain in my shoulder." She died
before we could get her on the bed. It was in January. I was just a little
girl, maybe three or four years old. Grandfather Mullins also died
suddenly
inthe field near Logan's, now in Clintwood. He died in the fall, rnaybe
in
September. His wife lived maybe 12 years longer than he did. My
sister-in-law, Anne (Howell) Yates (who is present and assents to this)
was
just a little girl when grandfather died. I don't know the ages of my
grandparents when they died.

Ira was never married.
William was cremated in Ballard, a suburb of Seattle, Washington.

Mary never married.

Richard died young.
Her nickname was Jennie.
Cynthia never married.
