GLADYS HURT
1918 - 2012Gladys Burke Hurt, 93, was called to the Lord on Friday, October 12, 2012, in Lexington, Ky., where she had been living for about a year and a half. She died due to complications following surgery.
She was born November 2, 1918, to Martha and Millard Burke at their home on Julius Avenue in Pikeville.
She attended Local schools and graduated from Pikeville High School in 1936. She worked as a Medical Secretary for Dr. Harvey Page for over ten years. During that time she did extensive travelling including visiting her sister in France and touring all of Europe. She met her husband, William Hurt, Sr. and they married in 1969. They lived happily till Bill's death in 2006. They played golf and bridge and belonged to the country club in Pikeville. For many years they Wintered in Florida, playing golf and having fun with friends and visitors. Gladys was very active at the First Baptist Church of Pikeville where Bro. Paul Badgett was her pastor. She belonged to the Jolly Bunch and always looked forward to participating in all of their charitable works. She never missed Sunday School and enjoyed all of her classmates. The First Baptist Church played a major part in her life and she loved everyone there. In addition, Gladys also belonged to a local social sorority, Beta Sigma Phi, where she had many good times.
Predeceasing Gladys are her parents, Martha and Millard Burke, her sibling, Mildred Burke Duncan, Eunice Runyon, Flo Eley, Lilian Rutledge, Lester Burke, Millard Burke, Jr., and Jackie Burke, her step-son, Dr. James P. Hurt and her beloved husband, William Hurt, Sr.
She is survived by her three nieces, Rebecca Burke Faeder, her husband, Dave and their four children, Laura, Lindsay, David and Michael, Susan Duncan Ziemianski and her husband, Matt and their two children, Jason and Matthew, Jan Meade and her daughter, Anne, two nephews, Timothy Eley and his wife Patty, James Runyon and his wife Elgie and their children, James and Nancy, two step-children, William C. Hurt II, and his wife Sophia and Williams two children, William Shannon and Jason Stuart, Rocky Hurt and his wife, Myra Jo and their daughter, Nikki, Dr. James Hurt's widow, Billie Jean and their daughter, Jana Carol.
Gladys was a fun and positive person and lived her long life to the fullest. She was loved by all of her family and friends and will be dearly missed.
Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m Sunday, October 21, 2012, at the First Baptist Church of Pikeville, with Bro. Paul Badgett officiating. Burial will follow in the Johnson Memorial Park at Pikeville, Kentucky.
Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Saturday, October 20, 2012, in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel.
