Jesse Martin was the son of William Combs "Martin" and Mary Ashley Smith. William was a Combs raised by the Martins after his family was killed in a wagon accident. No proof has been found that William actually m. Mary Ashley Smith. Mary Ashley was first married to one Alexander Smith, son of Jordan and Barbara Smith. Mary's husband, Alexander was killed during the war. Mary is found with William, having Jesse and Nancy in 1880 Perry Census. It appears that Jesse change his name from Martin to his mother's Smith name when he got married. Jesse had a very wild streak in him. It is believed that Jesse and Frank were named after Jesse and Frank James. There is also a story that the James boys came through Hazard, Ky and picked up Jesse and took him to Huntington WV and they robbed a bank there. There is also a story that Jesse had a first wife by the name of Sarah Francis. Jesse was involved with the Hatfields and McCoys. One of the children married a Hatfield, and another married a McCoy.
