Thanks to Randy Roe, son of Maxwell Powell Roe and Beverly Jane New, for submitting information and photos for this family by email on 26 July 2009. Randy sent in the following:

Bertha (Bertha L Turner New, d/o Henry Turner and Polly Potter) said that her Grandmother, Elizabeth Lunsford, was known as "Bessie". She said Bessie's Father had been a plantation owner. During the Civil War as soldiers drew close to their home Bessie's father put she and her sister in a ditch and covered them with branches. He made Bessie promise to take care of her sister and to stay in the ditch covered with the branches until the soldiers had gone. She did as she had promised. Bessie
watched as the soldiers burned the house with her parents in it.

Bertha told Mom that Henry Turner, her father, was of Irish descent and the son of George Turner II and Polly Gross. He worked in the coal mines and there received a bad head injury. Henry died relatively young and left his wife Polly with 11 children to support and raise. She did this by growing vegetables and peddling them or trading them for what the family needed.
