Rev Filmore
Addington and Nancy Bentley. John Harvey Reynolds was described in an
article in the Courier Journal in 1901 as unusually handsome, and one who talked
splendidly. The following from Eloise Delzer: John Harvey Reynolds was killed in a raid on an illegal whiskey site
in Flat Gap, Johnson County Kentucky August of 1921 and buried at Wise,
Virginia. John was a federal law enforcement officer engaged in putting
a stop to boot legging spirits. Somehow that seems out of character with
the rest of the fellows...who all liked a drink or two....including the
women.
Recently this summer 2007 I attended a ceremony in front of the Johnson
County Courthouse where he was honored....one of the first to lose their lives
in the service of law enforcement. He was shot conducting a raid on a moonshine
operation in Johnson County along with another police officer, a federal marshal
came to read the circumstances of his death and obit. The marshal was a school
friend of my daughter, Susan, which really made it special. The monument stands
in front of the Johnson County Sheriff's office in Paintsville, Kentucky.
