"Aged Whitesburg Citizen is Called"

Disabled and almost an invalid for several years and confined to his home on Solomon Branch of the town John Boatrigth, around seventy-seven suffered a severe paralytic stroke some time Monday and passed away Tuesday evening. He was the son of the late G. H. Boatright, Sr., and was a native of Scott County. When a mere boy he came with his parents to Letcher County where in the years following he married and resided till his death. When a young man he married Mary, the young daougther of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Breeding of Camp Branch. The union was a happy one. Five children, three sons and two daughters all whom are married were born into the family. These are Wm. H. Boatright, for a number of years a leading citizen of Benham, Sam, an engineer residing at Jeff, Perry County, and Ruben of Detroit Mich. The two girls Hattie and Pearl, both married, reside at McRoberts. He leaves besides his widow two or three brothers and one sister, Mrs. E. E. Bently that we recall.

Burial took place in the family cemetery near the Wesley Breeding home on Camp Branch.

John Boatright belonged to a highly honorable and reputable old Virginia family. Honesty, integrity and straightforwardness ruled his life. It was our pleasure to know him for long uears and we have not known a more trust worthy and dependable citizen. We extend sympathies to his widow, the children and all the friends.

The following is from The Mountain Eagle newspaper dated 1/19/39, page 2, column 3:

"Card of Thanks"

We are deeply grateful to all our friends, and neighbors for every deed of kindness, and thoughtfulness given to our father, and husband during his illness. How thankful we are to all who helped us in anyway after his death. May you have God's goodness showered upon you for the blessings you have been to us in our prayer.

24. Granville Henderson "Rod" Boatright

The following article is from The Mountain Eagle newspaper dated 10/08/1942,
page 1, column 7:

"G. H. Boatright Passes At Home Of His Daughter"

Mr. G. H. Boatright died on Friday night, Oct. 2, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Hall on Rockhouse following a week's illness. He was born in Scott County, Virginia in 1864 and came to Kentucky when a young man and married Alice Hale, a sister of the late E. B. Hale and of Mrs. W. E. Cook of Whitesburg. To this union were born four daughters and two sons, namely, Mrs. Tom Williams, Mrs. Ira Reynolds of Hindman, Ky.; Mrs. Shade Reynolds, and Mrs. Marvin Hall, Orville and Kermit Boatright.

G. H. Boatright was a member of Whitesburg Methodist Church and during his active years he worked in Thornton mines as a carpenter. His wife preceded him in death seven years.

Besides his children, named above, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Elberson Bentley and Mrs. Mary Reynolds of Wise, Va., and two brothers - William Boatright, Big Stone Gap, Va., and Rufus Boatright, Whitco, Ky.

In a conversation with James A. Boatright, (Orville, Granville) he remembers that his grandfather "Rod" was called that because he was named after an ancestor. This would most likely be Nimrod Taylor the Grandfather of his mother Sarah Ann Taylor. He also remembered that people would call his Grandfather the Scot, James always assumed that Granville had immigrated from Scotland.

Found in the 1920's US Census, Kentucky, Letcher Co., east Whitesburg, Enumeration District #66. Lists Granville age 55, born in VA, both parents born in VA., wife Alice age 47 born in KY, Father born in Va, mother born in KY, Lists children Lizzie age 24, Orville age 16, Marjery age 14, and Kermit age 10, all children listed as born in KY.
