(Source) John Whit was an orderly in the Southern Army during the Civil War. He and Margerene lived for a time on Mallet Fork of Carr's which is now Knott County, KY. They moved c. 1883 by horse and wagon to Petersville, Lewis County, KY. They drove 100 cattle in front of the wagons and farmers would let them spend the night. It took them 11 days to arrive at Lewis County. Their wagons were packed with only food. John and Margerene are both buried at McEldowney Cemetery, Lewis County, KY. (Source) Benjamin E "Ben" Caudill went back to Letcher County after his wife Melissa's death in Lewis County in 1885. He never remarried. He was elected to the State Legislature in 1891 and served until 1893. He represented Letcher, Floyd and Knott Counties. Ben was a cashier in two banks in Whitesburg. After his wife Malissa died, he lived with his sister Polly Ann Caudill, who was never married, at the old homeplace on Sandlick (Kentucky).

She had a vision of dying and going to heaven but was sent back. Six months later she died. Children of Rosetta S Stamper and George Jesse;

(Source) George Jesse was very mean and drank a lot. Rosetta's parents did not want her to marry him. He reportedly built a brush fire and came to the house and told Rosetta he was going to throw her into it. She threw a hot skillet at him and grazed his head. He said that was the only time he had ever felt fear and he left. An article on Kinniconick Creek by William M. Talley states that the old Vanceburg Courier tells that on 9/29/1888, a murder took place on Kinney somewhere between Petersville and Indian Creek. Peter Siders was shot and killed in the vicinity of T.B. Clark's store. At first a man named John Stephens (or Stevenson) was accused, but later five men named John Steadham, Charles Green, Henry Lucas, Ellsberry Stacy and George Jesse were suspected of being involved in the crime, but the case was dismissed in March 1889 for lack of solid evidence. Uncle Seymour Stamper took the responsibility of burying his sister and George's wife, Rosetta, and Uncle Seymour brought a gun to Rosetta Jesse's funeral. He said if Jesse interfered, he would have killed him. They had six children but Howard Pollitt could only name Floyd and Estill Jesse.

He was called "Uncle Seymour." The Portsmouth Daily Times listed him in his obituary as "John Ceymore" Stamper. Having died with no money after spending it all on his wife's illness, he was buried by his nephews, who chipped in enough money to pay his funeral expenses.

I can't remember him when he wasn't bald, although Daddy still has hair, even though it is thinning now. When pulling up to the gravesite after Raymond's funeral, we saw two white doves fly on the ground. When we stopped, they flew away - just like Daddy saw the white dove when Maurice died. Jesse worked at a steel mill in Portsmouth, OH. In 1930, he bought a farm in Winchester, Adams Co., OH, and farmed there until his death; m. 1913 to Edna Pearl Curtis b 1891 d 1972 d/o William Curtis and Ellen Redden. (source) Edna was sister to Benjamin's wife, Alma Curtis, and daughter of William and Ella Redden Curtis. This makes their children double cousins. After Jesse died, Edna moved to Maryland with her son, Harry, and she worked at Cross & Blackwell Canning Factory. Children of Jesse Harlan Stamper and Edna Pearl Curtis;

Harry moved to Baltimore in 1941 and welded on war ships. His sisters and mother followed him to Baltimore. Moved to Portsmouth, OH, and worked at a mill in the bomb shop. Later bought a truck and hauled coal; worked on the flood wall in Portsmouth; owned farm; in '48 they moved to Lewis Co. and Harry drove a milk truck until 1952. Went to work for Lowe's until they moved to Ohio in 1956. In Winchester, OH, Harry bought a milk route and went into business for himself. At 52, he developed heart trouble and had to sell his business and retire. Gladys worked at American Hammer & Piston Ring Co., Baltimore, MD; Lowe's Hardware Store in Lewis Co., KY; went to beautician school with her daughter; owns her own beauty shop in Winchester, OH. She's the daughter of Wilburn Sparks and Ida Cassidy Sparks.
