James Harvey Sykes m. 1879 Buchanan Co VA to Martha Jane Hill b 4 Jan 1859 Washington Co VA d 3 May 1928 Pike Co KY, buried Potter Cemetery, Elkhorn Creek, Pike Co KY, d/o Jeptha Stephen Hill and Nancy Sullivan. Children of James Harvey Sykes and Martha Jane Hill;

1. Nancy Jane Sykes b 1879 Dickenson Co VA. Nancy Sykes was born with physical disabilities and consequently she was never married. Written by B Sykes.

2. Mary Elizabeth Sykes b 1882 Dickenson Co VA m. John C. Potter b 1883 d Pike Co, KY s/o Richard Potter and Winefred "Winnie" Willis.

3. Lorenzo Dale Sykes (aka Rans Loranse) b 7 Jun 1884 Dickenson Co VA d 30 May 1926 Elkhorn City, Pike Co KY, m. 4 Apr 1904 Elkhorn City, Pike Co KY to Mary Elizabeth Potter b 1887 Elkhorn City, Pike Co KY, d/o Levi Potter and Sarah Ellen Salyer.

Levi Sykes lived up Kettle camp, also at Ashcamp. We used to have Dinner about every Sunday with him and Dixie. I wish I had known them better.  Written by B Sykes

5. Burrell "Burr" P Sykes b 1894 Elkhorn City, Pike Co KY d 1955 Elkhorn City, Pike Co KY.  Burrell P. Sykes was never married, he lived alone in a log house up Kettle Camp. I can remember going there with my Dad as a child. His funeral was held at Levi Sykes home in 1955. Written by B Sykes.

6. Lucinda Sykes b 1891 Elkhorn City, Pike Co KY d 1986 Elkhorn City, Pike Co KY m. John "Smilin' John" Bartley. My brother Jimmy and I were fortunate enough to meet Lucinda in her later years. She was a wonderful Lady, with a great sense of humor. I have a picture of her, myself and brother Jimmy together. Written by: B Sykes

9. Nona Sykes


James (Harve) Sykes passed away February 24, 1938 at Praise, Kentucky. He was born April 24, 1860 in Russell Co. Virginia to James W. Sykes & Mary (POP) Bartley. He married Martha J. Hill who passed in 1928. He leaves 3 sons Levi, Burrell and Arthur all of Kettle Camp, Ky. Daughters Nancy, Nona, Mrs. J. G. Fields (Eliza Sykes) Mrs. John Bartley (Lucinda Sykes). One son L. D. Rans Sykes died in 1926. He was a member of the Sweet Home Church. The funeral was preached by Dave Church, Alex Rakes, J. M. Gibson, Shade Standifer, John Hess, Howard Callie, Ballard Baker and Ken Gillespie. Burial in Potter Cemetery on Elkhorn Creek.
The golden gate was opened, a gentile voice said "Come" and with a kind word unspoken, Papa entered home.
