Rudolph "Rhea" Maggard , Sr.

Notes from "Coming Down Cumberland"
Rudolph was just 5 yrs old when his family came down Cumberland.
The mountain man, the Great Hunter of upper Frank's Creek.
At 59 yrs old he still stood straight and handsome. He had dark complexion, thick coarse jet black hair. His eyes were clear and piercing, his walk was strong and steady. He was a kind man, he took pleasure in coming down from the high Black Mountain carrying some form of game to leave with his neighbor Old Ely Boggs. He made it a point to kill enough game to share with the Boggs family. At times he laid to the plow when the weeds were going to choke out the Boggs corn patch, with Elizabeth Boggs hoeing behind him. When plowing was done, he took up the hoe and hoed along side Elizabeth until the patch was clean.
Then there was a time when Elizabeth severely cut her foot on a corn knife, and it looked like she had developed a case of blood poisoning. the strong, mountain man had lifted her to his saddle and together they had ridden down Cumberland and up the Pine Mountain and down on to the head of Cowan, where he left her in the care of the noted herb doctor, Mathy Fields. Later, when she was well, he rode back and brought her home to the Boggs cabin above Franks Creek.
Though Rudolph was 59 and Elizabeth was 16 they were married.
Rudolph had the distinction of being 74 yrs older than his youngest son and there was a span of 52 years between the oldest and youngest of his family.
Buried in Joel Sturgill Cemetery near his home near Franks Creek and by his first wife, Anna Roberts
