Johnston was killed during the Civil War he saw his son George Cantrell one time as he passed by the family Pike Co KY. he was a Private 10th Regiment, KY Confederate Army Co K. 10th Cavalry Regiment was formed during the fall of 1863 using May's KY Mounted Battalion as its nucleus. It contained men from KY and VA. The unit served in the Department of East Tennessee and the Department of Western VA and East Tennessee, and skirmished in various conflicts in Tennessee, VA, and KY. In the spring of 1865 it disbanded. The field officers were Colonels George R. Diamond, Andrew J. May, and Edwin Trimble, and Major William R. Lee.
