Creed Monroe Vanover Bio
By Debby Haase McLean

Creed Monroe Vanover was the 6th, of nine children born to Wesley Y. and Martha Jane (Fleming) Vanover. He married Harriet Izetta Fleming on January 5, 1893 at the age of 19. They had eleven children, the last died during childbirth with Izetta. According to family tradition, the baby was buried in Izetta's arms.

Creed was expecting a child, (Mildred Vanover Mullins), with Martha Moore in July 1916, the same year Izetta was pregnant with his 11th child. He never married Martha.

Creed married Ona (Bolling) Stewart, 18 years his junior, several weeks after Izetta died (November 16, 1916). She brought two children from her previous marriage, Robert and Bertha Kate, 8 year old twins. Creed and Ona did not bear any children together.

As witnessed and told by Creed & Izetta's children, "Onie" was a mean-spirited step-mother. Often, the children were hungry and unfed. Many left home, as children, to find work to escape her. This is family history. When they could safely do so, as adults, they made their voices heard and passed down the history to their children and so on. By finally speaking up, they freed themselves from the bonds of this injustice. Why Creed turned a blind eye to Onie's many abuses is unknown. Creed never knew his many grandchildren as he did not maintain a relationship with them or his own children.

Creed was a horse trader, traveling across the mountains from Tennessee, through Kentucky, to Virginia. He was totally blind 4 years before his death. Creed Monroe Vanover died at the age of 84 yrs. + 11 months at his home. He was first buried in Ona's family plot in Tennessee, his children moved his remains in 1962 and re-interred them beside his first wife, Izetta (Fleming) Vanover. Ona (Bolling) Stewart Vanover died from a gunshot wound in August 1959, and was buried in Tennessee.
