Damron, Glenn Douglas

Funeral services for Glenn Douglas Damron, 79, of McRoberts, KY, were held February 29, 2008 at Carty Funeral Home. Burial was in the Jenkins-Payne Gap Cemetery. Born in Pike County, KY, he was a son of the late Everette and Bess Kinney Damron. He was the father of the late Randy Damron, and a brother of the late Chuck Mitchell and Pat Smith. Damron worked for Consolidation Coal Co. and Bethlehem Mines, starting out in the company store. Later, he worked in the engineering department; as section foreman; as mine foreman; as superintendent; and as director of safety. He was active in mine rescue work and was captain of two national mine rescue championship teams. He also served on the mine first aid teams. He received two honorary Kentucky Colonel certificates for his work in mine safety. He was active in the community and had been working on improvements on the road between McRoberts, KY and Dunham, KY. He was a member of the Jenkins, KY Christian Church. Surviving are his wife, Carol Bartley Damron; two daughters, Betsy Addington, Burdine, and Lisa Wiley, King, N.C.; three sons, Mike Damron, Lynchburg, Va.; Richard Damron, Jenkins, KY; and Shawn Damron, Minot, N.D.; a stepson, Douglas Burke, Isom, KY; 12 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. A daughter of the late Casie and Betty Ison Amburgey, she was born in Neon, KY. She died July 19, 2007 at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, KY. Mrs. Davis was married to the late Clifford Franklin Davis. She was a member of the Neon First Church of God. She was the stepmother of the late Billy Davis, and a sister of the late Otis Amburgey, Prova Amburgey, Casie Amburgey, and Lottie Mae Dixon. Mrs. Day was a member of the Methodist Church and often played the piano for many famous singers who passed through Whitesburg, KY. She was the widow of Earl H. Day and a sister of the late Gordon T. DeSimone was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a retired employee of Beth Elkhorn Corporation. He received a bachelor's degree in chemistry and biology from Easter Kentucky University. He was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church, and was very involved with his community and served on various boards and committees. She was a homemaker, a part-time teacher at the Island Creek School, and of the Old Regular Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Dye. She is survived by one son, James Michael Dye of Island Creek, KY; one brother, Clement Adams of Island Creek, KY; four sisters, Ruby Compton of Detroit, MI, Billie Lorriane of Island Creek, KY, Laura Mullins of Cowpen, Pikeville, KY, and Maxine Osborne of Coons Branch, Island Creek, KY; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, in the Island Creek Old Regular Baptist Church with Kelly Slone, Leonard Hamilton, John Paul Hamilton and others officiating. Emil Eldridge
Letcher County, KY native Emil Eldridge, 75, died October 31, 2007 at his home in Somerset, KY. Born in Blackey, KY to the late Henry & Lucinda Fields Eldridge, Eldridge was a retired factory worker from Southern Molding in Frankfort, KY, where he worked for 24 years. He was a member of Friendship Old Regular Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Day Eldridge; two sons, Harold Eldridge of Somerset, KY, Kenneth (Patricia) Eldridge of Bronston; a daughter Barbara Renee Eldridge of Bronston; a brother, Hubert Eldridge of Blackey, KY; three sisters, Betty Sue Williams of Shelbyville, Indiana, Stella Shelton of Crab Orchard, KY, and Arlie Simpson of Waynesburg, KY. David Herbert "Herb" Eller, 76, of Jenkins, KY, died May 18, 2008 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn., after a short illness. Born in Clintwood, Va., he was a son of the late D.J. and Mary Eller. He was a brother of the late Smith Eller and Buford Eller. Eller was retired from National Mine Services Company in 1993. He continued to work for CAM Mining until last month. He was a corporal with the Medical Corps in the U.S. Army at Ft. Sam Houston, Tex., during the Korean War. Engle was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was the chaplain for the Whitesburg Veterans of Foreign Wars for many years. He had worked at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital and Mountain Comprehensive Health Care before retiring. He was a member of the Little Rock Old Regular Baptist Church at Kona, KY. He was a brother of the late Troy Engle Jr. and Olga Engle Hampton, and the father-in-law of the late George Randle Hale. Jimmy Fields, 65, of Whitesburg, KY, died May 7, 2008 at Indian Path Hospital in Kingsport, Tenn. He was a son of the late James and Laura Evans Fields, and was preceded in death by two brothers, Jr. and Jerry, and two sisters, Annabelle and Reanee. Surviving are two brothers, George Fields, Whitesburg, KY, and John Fields, Jenkins, KY, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held May 10, 2008 at Letcher Funeral Home. John Welch Fields, 75, died June 6, 2008 at his home in Casey County. Born in Letcher County, KY, he was a son of the late Corbin and Dollie Day Fields and was also preceded in death by a brother, Harry, and sister, Loraine. He was a retired coal miner and a U.S. Air Force veteran. Surviving are his wife, Ocie Fields; two sons, Jerry Fields and Thomas Fields, both of Mayking, KY; three daughters, Pina Fields, Louisville, KY; Mary Fields, Windsor, KY; and Melissa Raleigh, Eubank, KY; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; five brothers, Carl, Glenn, Eddie, Ray, and Terry; and five sisters, Imogene, Dorothy, Faye, Katie, and Ardell. Funeral services for Juanita Fields, 76, were held June 1, 2007 at Letcher Funeral Home. Burial was in the Whitaker Cemetery at Johnson Fork, KY. Ms. Fields died May 18, 2007 at her home at Norwood, Ohio. She was a daughter of the late Corbett Fields and Rebecca Jane Caudill Back. She is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Buskirk of Winchester, KY and Willa Sue Amburgey of Roxana, KY; nieces and nephews, Charmane Darian, Rebecca Fields, Debra Lynn Caudill, Vicki Blair, Denny Amburgey, Greg Amburgey, Tim Amburgey, Anthony Amburgey, Michael Buskirk, Brenda Faulkner, and Stephen Buskirk. Fields, Lula Stidham

Lula Fields died February 13, 2008 at her home at Cowan, KY. She was 76 years old. A daughter of the late Arthur and Alta Fields Stidham, she was married to the late Venon Boggs and after his death married the late Everette Fields. She was the mother of the late Gary Lee Boggs and a sister of the late Albert Stidham, Hubert Stidham, and Eula Stidham. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Rodney Sturgill. She was a member of the Freedom Gospel Church in Scottsburg, Ind. Surviving are a daughter, Daina Sturgill, Whitesburg, KY; three brothers, Bob Stidham, Darrell Stidham, and Dorris Stidham; five sisters, Sue Thomas, Shirley Kelly, Louie Whitaker, Evelyn Banks, and Pearl Banks; two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren; along with extended family, four daughters, Pam Craft, Mona Burns, Karen McCartney, and Kim McDanial; a son, Tim Fields; 15 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held February 16, 2008 at Letcher Funeral Home. Burial was in the Boggs family cemetery at Kingscreek, KY. Former Redstar resident Rachel Fields, 91, died January 24, 2008 at her home in Brownsburg, Ind. A daughter of the late Benjamin and Martha Susan Miller Whitaker, she was the widow of Sam Fields. She was also the mother-in-law of the late Bobby G. Collins. Mrs. Fields was a member of the Jeremiah Missionary Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons, Bobby J. Fields and wife Betsy, Gulfport, Miss., and Jimmy D. Fields and wife Robin, Athens, Tenn.; a daughter, Dana Faye Collins, Indianapolis, Ind.; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-greatgrandchildren. Raymond Raleigh Fields of Whitesburg, KY, died March 31, 2008 at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital, Whitesburg, Letcher Co, KY. He was 81 years old. Born in Letcher County, KY, he was a son of the late Matthew C. and Allie Frazier Fields. He was the brother of the late June Henry and Mafra Jones. Fields was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of Whitesburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5829 and American Legion Post No. 152. He was a member of the Whitesburg First Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Jean Lucas Fields; a son, Greg Fields, Ashland, KY; two daughters, Cathy Fields and Vicki Boggs, both of Whitesburg, KY; a nephew, Vaughan Jones, Louisville, KY; four grandchildren, Eric, Victoria, Adam, and Emily; and three great-grandchildren, Braxton, Bradyn, and Kylee. Former Letcher County, KY resident Jackie Flynn Sr., 65, died recently. Born in Whitesburg, KY, he moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1963. He worked at Hanson Manufacturing, Ford Motor, and other machine shops. He also worked at May Company and other downtown office buildings. He started a cleaning business in 1992. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Elaine Flynn; three children, Jack "Chip", Sandra "Sissy", and Richie; two grandchildren, Abby and Hannah; and six brothers and sisters, Ed "Junior", St. Louis, Mo.; Hoid, Atlanta, Ga.; and James, Allen, Cheryl and Sherry, all of Kentucky. Purnia M. Francis, 88, of Versailles, Ind., died January 9, 2008 at King's Daughters Hospital in Madison, Ind. Born in Whitesburg, KY, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Maude Taylor Sergent. She was the widow of John Francis, and the sister of the late Benton Sergent, Andrew Sergent, Paris Sergent, and Alida Fields. Mrs. Francis was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church where she participated in the Ruth Browne Circle. She was also a member of the Lamplighters Home Economics Club, and was a volunteer with the Ripley County Chapter of the Red Cross and the American Heart Association. Surviving are a son, Fred Francis and wife Candy, Elizabethtown, Ind.; two daughters, Hazel Lemen and husband Dennis, Zionsville, Ind., and Nancy Crocker and husband Lee, Waverly, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Natalie Gilpin and husband Jerry, Versailles, Ind.; Christopher Crocker, Columbus, Ohio; Elizabeth Crocker, Waverly, Ohio; Nicholas Lemen and wife Amy, Indianapolis, Ind.; Jeff Lemen, Palm Desert, Calif.; and Tony Francis and Kylie Francis, both of Elizabethtown, Ind.; four great-grandchildren; a great- great-grandchild; a brother, Willis Sergent, Paris Crossing, Ind.; and a sister, Mattie Bates, Sellersburg, Ind. Gertrude Frazier died November 7, 2007. She was 84 years old. Whitesburg, KY native Roger Frazier, 43, of Crothersville, Ind., died December 13, 2007 in Seymour, Ind. A son of Barbara Faye Bates Frazier of Eubank and the late William Carl Frazier, he was a 1982 graduate of Jennings County High School and a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of the Crothersville United Methodist Church. He was a brother of the late Katherine Frazier. Surviving are his wife, Teresa L. Nelson Donald Froste, 82, of Whitesburg, KY, died February 10, 2008 at the Veterans Center in Hazard, KY. Born in Letcher County, KY, he was a son of the late Joseph Bascum and Rachel Froste. He was married to the late Opal Siegriest Jones. Froste was a 1942 graduate of Whitesburg High School and a Navy veteran of World War II where he was a pharmacist mate. He attended Pikeville College and was graduated from the Kentucky School of Embalming in 1948. He was an accountant for Ashland Oil Company and had earlier worked at Craft Funeral Home and as a sales representative for Alber's Drug Company of Knoxville, Tenn. He was a member of the Millstone Missionary Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Sueellen McNassar, Chicago; a son, Phillip Donald Froste, Greensboro, N.C.; three stepchildren; three grandchildren, Jack McNassar, Paul McNassar, and Rachel Frank; a great-grandchild, Tobias Frank; and cousins Jerry Blair, Glen Polly, Ralph Polly, and Norma Collins Thompson. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) February 13, 2008 at Letcher Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Hop Gibson Cemetery at Little Cowan, KY. Betty Fern Fugate, 52, of Middletown, Ohio, died May 28, 2008 at Hospice of Dayton, OH. Born at Mayking, KY, she was a daughter of Glenna Mae Polly Hicks and the late Charles Hicks, and a brother of the late Bennie D. Hicks. She worked at Madison Food Market as cashier and manager for 24 years, retiring in 2006. Mrs. Fugate attended the Poasttown Church of God. She was a CNA, and a member and past senior regent and recorder of Moose Chapter 183, Middletown Mad Hatters, and Praise and Worship Divas of West Chester. Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, Oceola "O.C." Fugate; children, Oceola "Opie" Fugate and wife Teresa, and Tisa Fugate; a grandson, Wyatt Nicholas Fugate; a brother, Charles R. Hicks and wife Cathy; a sister, Sharlotte Bentley; and friends, Colleen Johnson, Opal Chambers, Denise Bratcher, Barb Chasteen, and Donna Sams. Funeral services were held June 1, 2008 in Ohio.
