Gibson, Edgar L
Graveside services for Edgar L. Gibson, 77, will be held at 2 p.m., July 13,
2007, at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central in Radcliff, KY. Military honors
will be provided by a team from Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Born in Neon,
Letcher Co KY, he was a son of the late Monroe Issac and Ora Russel Collins
Gibson. He died December 21, 2006 in Louisville, KY after a short illness. His
wife of 50 years, Beverly Patterson Gibson, who died December 4, 2002, will be
buried with her husband. Gibson was graduated from Fleming-Neon High School in
1948 and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force with the duties of communication and
intelligence. He served in the Korean and Vietnam wars and also served in Japan,
Turkey and Germany. His last assignment was to the 1923rd Comm Group as center
operations superintendent. He received the Air Force Commendation Medal for
Meritorious Service four times, and the Bronze Star. He retired in 1974 after
service of 26 years. In 1978, he joined the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization
Service as assistant port director in Laredo, Tex. In 1988 he was transferred to
the Louisville office where he was an adjudication officer. He worked for the
Immigration and Naturalization Service for 28 years. Surviving are a daughter,
Gwen Valdez and husband Ronnie, Enid, Okla.; two sons, Mark Gibson and wife
Mary, Louisville, KY, and Gary Gibson, Houston, Tex.; a brother, Stanley Gibson,
McRoberts, KY; a sister, Geraldine Mosgrove, Detroit, Mich.; five grandchildren,
Kristi, Cammi, Ashley, Beverly, and Jessica; and a great-grandchild, Aaron Eric.
Gibson was preceded in death by four brothers, Kermit McIntosh, McKinley Gibson,
Arnold Gibson and Lowell Gibson, and a sister, Dianna Lynn Hall. Posted in the

Funeral services for Polly Ann Duncil Gibson, 88, were held March 3, 2008 at
Everidge Funeral Home. Burial was in the Colson Cemetery, Colson, KY. A daughter
of the late Ezra and Ella Pigman Everidge, she was born in Letcher County, KY.
She died February 29, 2008 at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital,
Whitesburg, Letcher Co KY. She was married to the late Floyd Duncil, and after
his death married the late Charlie Gibson. She was a sister of the late Gladys
Holbrook, and was a member of the Blair Branch Old Regular Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Earl C. Duncil and wife Coleen, Kite, KY; a daughter,
Mercitus Adams and husband Johnny, Sandlick, KY; two brothers, Emitt Everidge
and L.B. Everidge, both of Colson, KY; four sisters, Dicie Jenia, Franklin,
Ohio; Samantha Hall, Colson, KY; Nell Williams, Whitesburg, KY; and Wilma Preece,
Hindman, KY; four grandchildren, Avery Adams and wife Kathy, Jatanna Hall and
husband Keith, Bridgett Hall and husband Larry, and Elizabeth Duncil Honeycutt

Gilliam, Virginia Carolyn Ison
Funeral services for Virginia Carolyn Ison Gilliam, 70, of Cumberland, KY, were
held May 17, 2007 at the Little Cowan Primitive Baptist Church. Burial was in
the Hop Gibson Cemetery at Cowan, KY. A daughter of the late Cassel and Beulah
Gibson Caudill, she died May 15 at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital. She
was a sister of the late Stuart Sigrest, George Sigrest, and Emma Campbell. Mrs.
Gilliam was a member of the Little Cowan Primitive Baptist Church, Cowan
Community Homemakers, Women's Auxiliary, and White Shrine. She served as a
volunteer grandparent and was a columnist for The Mountain Eagle, The Cousins,
and the Community Press. Surviving are her husband, Bethel Gilliam; two sons,
Robert Irvin Ison and wife Carla Slone, and Earnest Franklin Ison and wife
Diana, all of Little Cowan; three daughters, Janice Kae Fisher and husband
David, Little Cowan; Doris Vern Collins of Little Cowan and husband Robert of
Buck Creek; and Donna Vae Watts and husband Mike, Roxana; a stepson, Wayne
Gilliam, Speedwell, Tenn.; three stepdaughters, Joan Lewis, College Corner,
Ind.; Sheila Hall, Cumberland; and Sharon Parks, Memphis, Ind.; a brother,
Robert Caudill, Little Cowan; three sisters, Thelma Ison, Flemingsburg; Susan
Stamper, Lexington; and Janice Wolad, Maryland; 11 grandchildren, Robbie Ison
Jr., Rachel Fields, Jessica Cook, Dillon Fisher, Frederick Eversole, Morgan
Eversole, Micca Watts, Michael Watts, Raven Ison, Dylan Bentley, and Ryan

Goodlette, Bess
Bess Goodlette, age 79, of Hazard, KY, died Saturday, August 2, 2008 at the
Hazard ARH Regional Medical Center, Hazard, KY. She was a member of the Hazard
Christian Church where she was the pianist for many years. She was also a member
of the Alpha Xi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi for 23 years. She was the daughter of
the late Roy Goldsmith and the late Pauline Begley Goldsmith. She is preceded in
death by her grandson, Joseph Taylor Fannin. She is survived by her husband, Joe
Goodlette; daughters Margaret (Hugh Hodge) Goodlette and Paul Goodlette; sister
Virgina and Ansel Davis; grandchild Amy Fannin and special friend Dottie
Caldwell. Donations may be made to Mountain Hospice, 3115 N. Main, Hazard, Ky.
Arrangements were handled by Maggard Brothers Funeral Home where the family
received friends on Monday, August 4, 2008. The funeral service was conducted at
the funeral home on Tuesday, August 5, 2008 with Rev. Ellen Peach officiating.
Interment was at the Englewood Cemetery in Christopher, KY.
Goodman, William Charles
William Charles "Bill" Goodman, 62, of Springboro, Ohio, died May 8, 2007. Born
at Cromona, KY, he was a son of the late James Thomas and Geneva Young Goodman.
He was an uncle of the late Dana Webb, Manuel Hampton, and Charles Eddie
Goodman, and a brother of the late Viola Hampton, Andrew Goodman, James Goodman,
Sherman Goodman, and Big William Goodman. Goodman was a U.S. Marine veteran of
the Vietnam War and received a number of medals including the Purple Heart, the
National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of
Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary
Medal, Land Mine War Force and Demolition in Vietnam, 3D Engineer Command. He
was also an expert marksman and was director of Small Arms and Fire Arms, and
received the Expert Machine Gunners Medal and recognition for Faithful and
Dedicated Service of the Eighth Marine Regiment. He also was a policeman in
Neon, KY. Goodman retired from General Motors Trucks and Bus Plant of Dayton,
Ohio, after working 30 years. He was a coach with the Trotwood, Ohio, Boys'
Baseball Club, and an avid fan of the Cincinnati Reds and the University of
Kentucky basketball team. Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Patricia Bullion
Goodman; a son, William Thomas Goodman; a daughter, Tammy Lannette Buerger;
grandchildren, Dylan Thomas, Christian, and Zoe; five brothers, Harold Goodman,
Ricky Goodman, Ray Goodman, Gay Goodman, and Dennis Goodman; and four sisters,
Wilma Mullins, Betty Webb, Elsie Webb, and Deranda Wyatt. Funeral services were
held June 2, 2007 in Trotwood, Ohio. Burial was in the Dayton Ohio National

daughter of the late John B. and Ellen Morgan Sizemore and the widow of William
Griffin. She died November 2, 2007. Mrs. Griffin was retired from the Fort
Jackson Post Exchange. She is survived by a daughter, Ellen Griffin Brown and
husband Mike; a granddaughter, Katie Brown; and two sisters, Audrey Baker and

October 20, 2007 in Fairfield, Ohio. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery. A son of
Vergie Whitaker Griffith and the late Rence Griffith, he was born at Hallie, KY.
He died October 16, 2007. Griffith was an electrician at Fusite and was a U.S.
Army veteran. He enjoyed fishing and was a handyman for his family and friends.

43 years old. She was a daughter of Wanda Miller Halcomb Akemon of Hallie, KY

Halcomb, Willmer
Funeral services for Willmer Halcomb, 84, will be held Thursday, July 26, 2007,
in Carlisle, KY. Born in Gordon, KY, he was a son of the late Irvin and Mary E.
Halcomb. He was a graduate of Kingdom Come High School, Eastern Kentucky State
Teacher's College, and the University of Kentucky. He died July 22, 2007 after a
short illness. Halcomb was an Army veteran of World War II when he fought at the
Battle of the Bulge in the 94th Infantry Division. He received a Purple Heart
and a Bronze Star. He retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil
Conservation Service after working in Boyd, Greenup, Monroe, Nicholas, and
Robinson counties in Kentucky. He was a member of the Association for Retired
Soil Conservation Service Personnel, and the Cedar Grove Old Regular Baptist
Church in Hallie, KY. He was also a member of the Eastern Star, a 32nd Degree
Mason, and a Shriner. He was a former member of the Rotary Club and was an
honorary Kentucky Colonel. Known to many as "Beeman", he was an avid beekeeper
and belonged to the Blue Grass Beekeepers Association. He was preceded in death
by a son, Wilmer Halcomb, and three brothers, Lawrence Halcomb, Warren Halcomb,
and Tolbert Halcomb. Surviving are his wife, Mary Ison Halcomb; two daughters,
Pamela Halcomb and Wilma Archey and husband, Richard; a grandson, Jeremy Archey;
and brothers and sisters, Clarence Halcomb, Ruth Parton, Ross Halcomb, Harry
Halcomb, Wallace Halcomb, Eva Goodman, Lester Halcomb, Mary Jackson, and Jesse

late Hassel and Hazel Ray Hall, he was born in Pike County, KY. He died February
11, 2008 at the home of his niece, Karen Kinder, and Randy Wolford. Hall was
employed by Golden Years Rest Home in Jenkins, and was a member of the Sons of

Sadie Imel Fife Hall, 90, died June 12, 2007 at her home at Sadieville, KY. Born
in Pike County, KY, she was a daughter of the late John W. Fife and Alka Mae

member of the Central Church of Christ in Georgetown, KY, and author of the
poetry book A Cloak of Memories. She also had been an Avon sales representative.
She was the widow of Benjamin H. Hall, the mother of the late Hubert H. Hall, a
sister of the late Berlin Fife, Zachary Fife, and Gerald Fields, the grandmother
of the late April Lace Hall, and the mother-in-law of the late William B.
Harper, Robert N. Collins, Can M. Bentley, and Burl Anderson. Surviving are nine
children, Patty Elson and husband Lloyd, Troy, Ohio; Bonnie Collins, Georgetown,
KY; Ernestene Bentley, North Ridgeville, Ohio; Douglas Hall, Midland, Mich.;
Billie Louise Fryman and husband Garnett, Sadieville, KY; Lillian Fisher and
husband Robert, Vandalia, Ohio; John L. Hall, Neon, KY; Vera Anderson, McRoberts,
KY; and Diane Pilkenton and husband Johnny, Bristol, Va.; three brothers,

Funeral services for Franklin C. Hammons, 71, of Columbus, Ind., were held June
9, 2007 in Columbus, OH. Burial was in the Old Union Cemetery. Born in
Whitesburg, KY, he was a son of the late Corbett and Elsie Hall Hammons. He was
a 1954 graduate of Whitesburg High School, Whitesburg, Letcher Co KY and retired
in 1995 from Reliance Electric in Columbus, OH. He was a member of the Old Union
United Church of Christ, and Kentucky Club of Southern Indiana. He died June 6,
2007. Hammons coached Bantam football and was an avid fan of University of
Kentucky basketball. He was a bell ringer for the Salvation Army and also
volunteered at Agency on Aging and Columbus Regional Hospital. Survivors include
his wife, Sandra Stiles Hammons; children Ed Hammons and wife Dawn, Lexington,

Donald Hampton, 80, of Hillsboro, Ohio, died February 26, 2008. Born in
Jeremiah, KY, he was a son of the late Jasper and Georgie Mae Back Hampton. He
was a stepson of the late Lloyd Day, and a brother of the late Vaultie Hampton
and Glendon Hampton He was a stepbrother of the late Amis Day, Wilson Day, and
J. D. Edward Day. Hampton was retired from Fisher Body in Cincinnati, Ohio He
was a U S Army veteran of World War II, and was a member of the Old Regular
Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia "Gin" Ruckel
Hampton, a son, Dale Hampton, Hillsboro, OH; a daughter, Tina Hampton Widmeyer,

Harris, Jane Harvey McKinney
Jane Harvey McKinney Harris, 56, died April 9, 2008 at her home at Morehead, KY
after an illness of several weeks. Born in West Liberty, KY, she was a daughter
of the late Chester and Beatrice Fugett Harvey. Mrs. Harris was a CMA/CNA and
worked at the Life Care Center for 29 years. She received her bachelor's degree
in sociology from Morehead State University and also attended Lees Junior
College. She was a member of the Hayes Branch Community Church. She was married
to the late Larry Joe McKinney and after his death married Ricky Harris, who
survives her. She was the mother of the late Ryan Matthew McKinney. Surviving in
addition to her husband are two sons, Larry Michael McKinney and wife Tonya,
Fleming-Neon, KY, and Stephen Ray Harris, Morehead, KY; a sister, Jean Harvey
Keeton, Morehead, KY; three grandchildren, Graham McKinney, Abbigail McKinney

Funeral services for Alice Mae Hayes, 77, of Jenkins, KY, were held July 16,
2007 at Carty Funeral Home. Burial was in Powell Valley Memorial Gardens at Big
Stone Gap, Va. Born in Jenkins, KY, she was a daughter of the late Alvin Powell
and Carrie Wilson Oliver, and the widow of David Hayes. She died July 13, 2007
at Cardinal Hill Specialty Hospital in Fort Thomas. Mrs. Hayes had worked at
Golden Years Rest Home and at Jenkins Community Hospital. She attended the
Freewill Baptist Church. She was a sister of the late Marie Finley, Joel Oliver,
Joseph C. Oliver, James F. Oliver, and Charles Oliver. Surviving are a
daughter, Sharon Hayes, Louisville, KY; three sons, Roger Hayes, Blackey, KY,
and Michael Hayes and James Anthoney Hayes, both of Jenkins, KY; a brother,

A memorial service for Delores Evelyn Webb Haynes will be held January 26, 2008
in Mt. Sterling, KY. A daughter of the late Henry M. Webb Sr. and Elizabeth "Nannie"
Hughes Webb, she was born in Letcher County, KY. She died January 19, 2008. She
was a sister of the late Carlos Webb, Howard Webb, Doward Webb, Arlie Webb, and
Henry M. Webb Jr. Mrs. Haynes attended the University of Kentucky, George
Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, and Transylvania University. She
worked in the Office of Research in the Arlington (Va.) County Public Schools,
and was secretary to the principal at Bryan Station High School in Lexington and
George Wythe High School in Virginia, to the president and chancellor at the
University of Richmond (Va.), and to the pastor of Green Memorial Methodist
Church in Roanoke, Va. She was also a reporter for the Henry County Local. She
served as co-chairman of Keep Fredericksburg Clean when the organization won a
national award. She was honored by the Fredericksburg mayor and city council for
Meritorious Achievements. Mrs. Haynes was president of the Campbellsburg Woman's
Club, a board member of the Presbyterian Post Medical Services and Montgomery
County Education Foundation, and president of the Montgomery County Council for
the Arts. She was a Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow and was named a Duchess of
Hazard, Ky. She attended the Ascension Episcopal Church and the First Church of
God. Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Dr. Robert C. Haynes Sr., Mt.
Sterling; a son, Robert C. Haynes Jr., Goshen; a daughter, Susan Frances Haynes,
Lexington, KY; a brother, Ret. Air Force Col. Vernard Webb, Charlottesville,
Va.; four sisters, Cora Sue Richardson and Audry June Kincer, both of Jenkins,
KY; Louise Minor, Bardstown, KY; and Monell Caudill, Grand Blanc, Mich.; four
grandchildren, Rebekah Haynes Downing, Clayton Todd Haynes, Courtney Leigh

Marcus E. Haynes, age 49, of Hazard, KY, died Monday, July 28, 2008, at his
residence. He was the son of the late Tom Haynes and the late Bertha Hollifield.
He is survived by one daughter, Lori Haynes; special companion Wanda Gayheart,
sisters Juanita Sebastian, brothers Luke, Clay, Clyde, Wade, and Larry Haynes.
He is also survived by a host of family and friends. Arrangements are being
handled by Maggard Brothers Funeral Home of Hazard, KY. The visitation was held
Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at the Clear Creek Old Regular Baptist Church. The
funeral service will be at the church on Wednesday (today), July 30, 2008, at 10
a.m. with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating. Interment will be at Beech

Holland, Zola Combs
Zola Combs Holland, born September 28, 1927, departed this life on Saturday,
July 26, 2008 peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family after a long
illness with cancer. She was 80 years, nine months and 28 days old at the time
of her passing. She was born in Acup, Ky. the daughter of the late Preston Combs
and the late Malvery Shepherd Combs. She was a lifelong resident of Perry
County, KY, and was a member of the Walker Branch Pentecostal Church, and was a
quilt maker, gardener, and a loving mother, grandmother and caring neighbor. She
was preceded in death by her husband, Hargis Holland; brothers Bradley, McCoy
and Frank Combs; sisters Addie Combs, Sadie Eldridge; Polly Burns and Nola
Nunley; and by one grandson, Edward Burns. She leaves the following relatives
surviving son Bobby Ray Burns of Hazard, KY; daughters Maxine Barnett and
husband David of Hazard, KY, Pauline Johnson and husband Danny of Hazard, KY,
and Evalene Holland Gross of Hazard, KY. She is also survived by her special
friend, Jenell Banks of Hazard, KY, 15 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and
two great great granddaughters and a host of nieces, nephews and many other
relatives and friends. The funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, July 29,

Harry Thomas Howard, 89, died May 15, 2008 at his home in
Radford, Va. Born in Kentucky, he was a son of the late McCoy and Lillie B.
Howard. He was married to the late Viola Morine Bentley Howard. Howard was a
member of the Calvary Baptist Church and had retired after 32 years from the
police force at RAAP. He also had been a coal miner in Kentucky for 14 years.

Gary Wallan Huff, 55, died November 24, 2007 at his home in Cumberland, KY after
a long illness. Born in Benham, KY, he was a son of the late John D. and Myrtle

Halcomb, Susie Cornett, Mae Ison, and Monette Ison. Huff had lived in
Cumberland, KY for two years and had previously lived in Indiana for 25 years.
He had been a construction worker and a coal miner. Surviving are six brothers,

Paul Huff, born March 18, 1912, departed this life on Monday, July 21, 2008, at
the Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center. He was 96 years, four months and three
days of age at the time of his passing. He was born in Leslie County, KY the son
of the late Sherman Huff and the late Lucy Jane Campbell Huff. He was a retired
coal miner and retired from the vocational school. He was a lifelong resident of
Perry County, KY and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army and
was a member of the Yerkes Baptist Church where he was song leader for years. He
was preceded in death by one daughter, Joyce Ann Merrill. He leaves the
following relatives surviving: daughter Judy M. Campbell and husband John C.,
Jr. of Krypton, KY; sister Marie Baker of Irvine, Ky.; four grandchildren and a
host of other family and friends. Funeral services were conducted on Thursday,
July 24, 2008, at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home in Hazard, KY with Paul Couch
and Jim Sluss officiating. Military rites were given immediately following the
funeral service at the gravesite. The burial followed in the Yerkes Baptist
Church Cemetery. The visitation was at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home on
Wednesday evening, July 23, 2008.

Jeremiah Missionary Baptist Church. Burial was in the Pearl Dixon Cemetery at
Blackey, KY. Born at Redfox, KY, he was a son of the late Stanley Ivey and
Hester Young Ivey Francis. He was a brother of the late Bradley A. Ivey and the
grandfather of the late Brian Miniard. He died June 4, 2007 at his home at
Jeremiah, KY. Ivey was a disabled truck driver and a U.S. Army veteran of the
Vietnam War. He is survived by a son, William Mark Ivey, Harlan; two daughters,
Teresa Hickey, Jeremiah, KY, and Debbie Dillman, Harlan, KY; five sisters, Ilene
Gibson and Anne Francis, both of Redfox, KY; Wanda Moore, Eastern, KY; Linda
Setzer, Whitesburg, KY; and Glenda Gardner, Bristol, Tenn.; six grandchildren,
Sherry Cooper, Logan Clem, David Miniard, Jessica Hickey, and Solomon Mullins
Ivey; three great-grandchildren, Tristen Whitaker, Trenton Whitaker, and Xander
Cooper; and his former wife, Mary Helen Ivey. Posted in the Mountain Eagle
